Lip Syncing
Lip syncing is the art of miming a song to make it look like you're singing, the movement of the mouth of the person miming must be completely in time with the music otherwise it'll be ineffective. Some singers habitually lip-sync during live performances, both and televised, over prerecorded music and mimed backing vocals.
By a singer or artist being able to lip sync means they can concentrate more of dancing or building a narrative instead of their vocals etc, they can record them singer in one take and then just focus on building up their performance or narrative.
The codes and conventions of lip syncing simply means matching up the lyrics with the singer in order to create an effective music video, this is only really the one code and convention that it all needs to match up.
Lip syncing may also be able to connect with the audience and be seen as a star image as usually its said to be essential that the artist is seen often in their own videos as this means that the audience can become more aware of the artist and their image.
Benefits
There is a benefit to lip syncing for artists as it means they don't have to put a strain on their voices continuously, which means they're able to do more performances etc as they're voice isn't being worn out. Also not everyone may be able to sing, especially in films therefore this is a clever trick to make it look as though they're good at singing.
Dangers
However there are always downsides to lip syncing and dangers involved. There could be the wrong timings for example the starting of the song, even if its just a second or half a second out it can look wrong and not as effective, giving it a downside. If the audience or people watching on TV see that an artist is lip syncing they may not believe that they're actually singing, when they do. Also they may not want to continue to support the artist or band a they feel that they're actually fake and not real due to the fact that they're miming/lip syncing not singing for real. This may reduce their fanbase which could impact the amount of people who actually go to the concerts in future. By the audience picking up on their favourite singers/artistes or bands lip syncing may put them off of them which would give them a bad reputation.
