Representation in music videos

Different ways of representation...

Gender
Females are often shown differently to men are displayed. Women are usually more sexualised. Wearing small amount of clothing or mainly "skimpy" clothing. This is usually put in place to reinforce the "Male Gaze".
In music videos men are usually displayed as people who are mainly labelled as powerful with quite a lot of success in money and can attract a lot of the female gender. This image is done in order to look admirable to other men for them to want to be what they are. Nice clothes and nice props are used in order to entice the female gender into liking them.

In  genres like pop they often stick to the idea of the female artist or actor in the music video as being sexualised however in different genres for example R&B the artist,if female,is often shown in a different light which is as being empowering and independent human beings. They are also brought to attention in different ways instead of being brought to attention by their physical body and beauty.

Males are seen as -
  • More aggressive and dominant behaviour
  • Unemotional
  • Adventurous
Females are seen as -
  • Explicit and sexual
  • Decorative objects
  • Provocative
  • Used for the male gaze

Sexuality
Years ago it was just heterosexual relationships that would be shown however now there is a much broader amount shown as it is now accepted meaning there are now more music videos which involve different sexuality.
Indie music videos usually show a wide range of sexuality, for example gay, lesbian or transgender.Although it has been accepted it is not completely mainstream within music videos yet. The most commonly shown sexuality's heterosexual where there is a man and woman in a sexual relationship or sometimes in other situations they're coming out of a bad relationship.

These are the two most commonly shown types of representation within music videos there is also gender shown and also always sexuality shown also within a music video.

Textual Analysis - Sia Chandelier

Sia Chandelier This music video is mainly well known for its  choreography as this is a memorable factor, there is no lip syncing - it is just literally Maddie dancing to the meaning of the song. Performance –  Sia doesn't like to star in her own videos, she has Maddie Ziegler a young girl who dancers throughout for her as a dancer. The performance is of Maddie dancing all around an abandoned, neglected location which is dirty and unpleasant. Lyrics -   The words "swinging from a chandelier" is usually know as a metaphor for partying to excess. As she states in the lyrics "party girls don't get hurt" so if she keeps drinking she won't feel the pain that addictions can eventually give.  She si...

Textual analysis of Toxic - Britney Spears

Britney Spears TOXIC Performance – When she is on the phone, it acts as if she is telling the story whereas the shots of her in her white suit is aimed to be more sexual and less story based. She performs every now and then in her see through suit where she dances and its quicker shots. Whereas when she’s walking on the plane its longer shots and slower crops, the shot on the plane tells more of a narrative. She is sexualised throughout the whole of the music video; however, some parts are more sexualised than others are. Shown by the costumes she is in and also movements, she is quite confident and out there, giving her a powerful image. Although the plane is filled with men she is dominant over them. Lyrics - Helps tell the story or give a general feeling or mood. Don...
