Evaluation 1 - In what ways do your music product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
One point during the song the lyrics are 'catching fire as the wind blows'. We have used a clip within our video where we have tried to portray those lyrics. This was done through the use of a candle and a girl blowing the candle out. The girl represents the wind whilst the candle represents the fire.
A shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented.
The record company would want the artist to be represented in a way that teenagers can relate them. This is very apparent as the girl in the video wants to feel loved and you could interpret it as she has gone through a break up. Something in which every teenager at some point in their life has experienced.
A shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre
Typically the video genre is actually techno, but we have interpreted the video genre as a romance/heartbreak genre. This is represented through the couple shots and through the girl in the video. Especially when she is crying in the mirror.
A shot that shows an intertextual reference
A lot of the camera shots and angles were inspired by Jess Glynne's music video 'Take Me home'. This was the use of side on angles and mid shots.
A shot that demonstrates your use
of camera
We used this shot to show different angles of the camera, a lot of our shots to show the lip syncing was done front on/close up there for we added this shot in so that it is a side on shot that still shows the lip syncing from the artist. We chose this angle so that it varied from the other shots we had been using which were all so similar. This shot demonstrates that we have used different types of shots. In this shot we have shown a different angle in which is a side angle/close up show her facial expression and her lip sync.
This shot shows the lighting use in our music video, we had the room lighting low and dimmed with the candle lighting up the room making it the light source of the scene. This was done to show the light being blown out as it was the last shot of the music video before it goes to a black screen.
A shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene
This shot shows mise en scene as we kept a background of white to emphasis the artiste. We made sure our background/location when the artiste is lip syncing are light helping to make the artiste bold in the shots so that the focus is on her.
A shot which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos
The shot above was inspired by Hailee Steinfields music video Capital Letters. One of the couple scenes you can see her walking off out the door hand in hand with her lover, back facing the camera.
A shot which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos
The darker shot was inspiration for the shot of the girl spinning. the darker shot is from Katy Perry's Firework music video. We felt that the shot from Firework represented joy and not wanting to give up.
Evaluation of the ways we did certain things in our music video and other tasks
The music video
Our codes and Conventions decisions
To make sure that our media work produced matched our target audience and the genre properly we had to take a few codes and conventions into consideration in order to create a digipak, website and music video that was made specifically for the correct target audience in order to make something accurate for the audience, without considering these then the music video and other productions may have been completely inaccurate for our set target audience.
Codes and conventions we used
We used the codes and conventions that are used in music videos, we went by these so that our music video was done correctly. The codes and conventions we followed were -
- Lip syncing by the artist or backing singers
- Lots of different shots
- Facial expressions
- A lot of different types of lengths of shots
We made sure we definitely included these four as these are the main ones.
We then followed the codes and conventions of our genre so these codes and conventions were more to the genre of music video and these were the ones we included -
- Locations with plenty of bright lighting
- Shots inline with the songs beat
- Some fast shots within other lengths
We included these in our music video as after a few times of watching music videos for inspiration we had picked up that there were these conventions displayed the most in them.
Our main colour scheme
We managed to get it down to three main colours which were purple, white and black. We chose these three so that all of the corporate colours would be used on all three productions, the music video, the digipak and the website. It allowed all of our pieces of work to look similar and well balanced within the colours. We chose these three colours as they all work well together.
E.g. White background purple text or black background white text etc.
Our colours we chose
We felt that these colours would go well with the name of the song and the ideas we had for example our "Galantis" creations and on our digipak especially. The colours illustrate the mood of the song well as well therefore the colours were a well thought out process in the making of our tasks and the music video.
We used these three colours on our digipak and these were the only three colours used throughout on our products. We used these three colours on each side of our digipak and only these three colours so we kept to the corporate colours.
Same with the website we used these colours and this is practical because the digipak and website can be associated together which is a positive for getting recognition and good for advertising also.
Shots and filter types
We made our artist singing shots the average normal brightness where as the 'memories' which were being displayed as the 'past'. This was done to show the contrast between the two different time frames and show the memories as they are a key part of the song. We did this so it would be easier for the audience to recognise the difference in situation and also so that it's easier for them to realise.
The type of effect we did with looking back on memories was inspired by Ed Sheeran and this was because we liked that the music that had a story to go with it,it made the song more memorable and relatable therefore we hoped ours would have the same effect on our target audience if all went to plan.
Costume and props
We used some stereotypes within our music video. For our teenage 'love' scenes we used the typical school children look and they were shown in their uniform and the young faces, we used the uniform to help enforce their age and their type of personalities within it. We used normal day to day clothing for the artist of the music video because she wasn't doing a performance she was just singing for the narrative to be displayed and to be the main focus.
On our digipak we didn't use any imagery of people or props therefore we didn't look into the kinds of props and costumes that may be used in digipaks for our genre. However we did look into the song meaning and we used broken hearts of various sides of the digipak so that it was using the same type of icons throughout.
